Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has chastised an ultranationalist junior minister for suggesting dropping a nuclear bomb on Gaza to kill Hamas fighters, with the remarks throwing a rare focus on the Middle Eastern country’s enigmatic nuclear weapons programme. On Sunday, Netanyahu announced that Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, a member of Israel’s far-right Jewish Power party, had been suspended from Cabinet meetings “until further notice” after he said in an earlier interview that he supported dropping “some kind of atomic bomb” on Gaza “to kill everyone.”
“That is one way to go,” Eliyahu told Kol Barama radio station. Netanyahu’s office issued a statement saying the minister’s remarks were “not based in reality.” According to the statement, Israel and its military are “operating in accordance with the highest standards of international law in order to avoid harming innocent people.” “We will continue to do so until our victory.” According to Israeli officials, Hamas militants invaded Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and seizing roughly 240 prisoners. The incident, the country’s worst in 75 years, has been dubbed “Israel’s 9/11.”
