Israeli commanders have visited frontline units to motivate troops who have gathered on the Gaza border in anticipation of a ground attack. “We will enter Gaza,” chief of staff Lieut Gen Herzi Halevi told a visiting army battalion on Saturday, according to Agence France-Presse. “Gaza is densely populated, and the enemy is planning a lot of things there – but we are also planning for them,” Halevi explained.
A ground assault presents several problems for Israeli forces, who would almost certainly face Hamas booby traps and tunnels in a tightly packed urban setting. Another complicating aspect is the safety of more than 200 captives kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and being detained in Gaza.
According to Canada, Israeli did not strike the Al-Ahli hospital.
The Canadian Defence Department has stated that Israel was not responsible for the Al-Ahli hospital explosion in Gaza.
According to Reuters, the department stated in a statement:
Independent analysis provided by the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command confirms that Israel did not target the Al-Ahli hospital on October 17, 2023.
According to the National Department of Defence, the explosion was most likely caused by an errant missile fired from Gaza, based on an examination of open source and classified reports. The murders were claimed on an Israeli airstrike by Hamas, but the Israeli army accused a misfired rocket from the Palestinian terrorist organisation Islamic Jihad, which denied responsibility.
The death toll in the Hamas-ruled enclave was first set at 471. The US intelligence community later allegedly concluded that 100 to 300 individuals were murdered, however this number may change. This Thursday feature goes at the efforts to figure out who was behind the blast:
