Death of Mahsa Amini
Niloufar Hamedi, who broke the news of Amini’s murder for wearing her headscarf too loosely, and Elaheh Mohammadi, who wrote about her burial, were sentenced to seven and six years in prison, respectively, by an Iranian court, according to Mizan, the country’s judicial news website. According to local media, the scribes have been accused with “collaborating” with the US government, among other things.
Both have been imprisoned for more than a year after covering the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022. This is a preliminary sentence that is appealable within 20 days.
